ALPHA THREE

Captain Otto Lehrack

A couple of days after Christmas we took our turn along the barrier. India, Kilo, and Lima companies went to Alpha 3, and Mike went temporarily to Gio Linh [Alpha 2]. I took over India Company a few days later.

Alpha 3 was on a small rise almost equidistant between Gio Linh and Con Thien. When 3/3 arrived after Christmas, the wooden frames of the Dye Marker bunkers had been completed by the Seabees and engineers, but they had not been sandbagged. It was a barren piece of real estate, perhaps a third of a mile across with all vegetation bulldozed away. It was surrounded by barbed wire and a strip filled with antipersonnel mines. To the north of Alpha 3 a few hundred meters was Hill 28, which the battalion held with two companies most of the time it was in residence. Forward of Hill 28 were the two closest outposts to the DMZ in all of South Vietnam, Observation Posts [OPs] Gold and Silver. Gold, my responsibility, was less than 150 meters from the edge of the zone. 3/3 would operate from these positions through May.
